The moon, a wonderful astronomical delight, comes to your plate with this fascinating DIY project. Follow the steps and eat your next meal on the moon.
I looked for a long time for a technique that would enable me to apply images on ceramics. So when I discovered decal paper (usable on all surfaces of the world, or almost), I had a slight impression of finding the holy grail of the DIY! Besides, some time ago, I had the opportunity to put my eye in a telescope to observe some planets and especially to see the moon so close that I could have counted its stones. It was a crazy visual experience!
And when you have a limitless fascination with astronomy, this kind of kitsch object will certainly become your prized possession.
What you will need:
A plate
decal printer paper
Gloss varnish
a pair of scissors,
a brush
food safe varnish
a bowl with water
and an oven!
Search for an image of the moon that you like. Measure the diameter of your plate and adjust the size of the image to print using photo editing software. Print it on the decal paper (glossy side).
Then apply the varnish spray in three coats , allowing to dry well between each application. This step is essential because without it, the ink of the decal would smudge on contact with water!
Cut without leaving an edge.
Immerse the image in water. After a few seconds, the printed side peels off from the other.
Take the image out of the water, keeping the two parts together . Place the image on the plate and gently slide the bottom layer to remove it.
Place the image well by sliding it delicately on the plate.
Remove any air bubbles with a clean cloth. If your plate is slightly hollow and creases are created at the edges, don’t worry, they will disappear after the plate has been placed in the oven .
So bake at 110 ° for 15 minutes (or according to the instructions on the packaging), let cool… the decal is now permanently attached!
Apply two coats of varnish suitable for food contact to finish and voila!
Now take great care of your plate: prefer washing by hand rather than in the dishwasher.
